Tablets are kind of a big deal – but they are matched by an equally large price tag.

Thankfully, companies like Vernon Computer Source have begun offering tablet PC rentals.

So what’s with the hype surrounding tablet PCs? It’s because they take the best of both worlds -- the mobility of a smartphone and the power of a full-blown computer-- and produce one lightweight, powerful package.

The public has embraced this move towards innovation and the first "premium" tablets, the Apple iPad, the Lenovo LePad, the HP Slate 500 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, have rocketed out of the gate with startling popularity, surpassing other bellwether market segments in leaps and bounds.

Tablet PCs are being substituted for other products in some cases, an aggressive adaption that has led some industry experts to refer to these tablets as "cannibals." According to Carolina Milanesi, vice president of research at Gartner, “The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalization of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players. Mini notebooks will suffer from the strongest cannibalization threat as media tablet average selling prices (ASPs) drop below $300 over the next 2 years.”

The tablet PC trend is one we can expect to continue well into 2011, but you need not purchase one flat out. Vernon Computer Source is offering tablet PC rentals of popular products like the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Apple iPad for a fraction of the cost to purchase -- which can be an ideal arrangement for individuals looking to host a trendy Internet café, industry trade show or any other hip or tech-savvy event.
