PC makers Asus and Acer were forced to cut down the orders of Ultrabooks by 40 percent because of slow sales. Both companies were planning to order approximately 300,000 Ultrabooks by the end of this year. But because of the lack of demand, the companies reduced the orders to nearly 180,000 units.
It seems the Ultrabooks from these companies are facing stiff competition from MacBook Air, as was expected, which is available for short term use from our laptop rental services.
A recent report has said that when compared to MacBook Air, the Ultrabooks from Asus and Acer lag behind both in performance and design. According to the report, the slow sales were expected as these devices could not offer any advantage over Apple's device. At present the Ultrabooks cost more than the laptops from Apple.
Moreover, Zenbook from Asus is priced higher than the base model of MacBook Air. Another advantage of Apple is that it has a large supply chain overseas.
The Ultrabooks’ manufacturers hope that the sales will increase by next year when Windows 8 will be released. While the various Ultrabook makers have struggled to establish themselves in the market, 4.85 million units of MacBook Air were sold worldwide.
There are also rumors that Apple will revamp the MacBook Air by next year to make it even more attractive and appealing to consumers. A recent report claimed that Apple is considering a 15 inch ultra-thin MacBook. But it is unclear if this gadget will be part of MacBook Air family.
