Predictions for 2012 IT Trends: the Era of Hybrid Tablet Rentals

This year was surely the year of the tablet. With numerous models revealed at 2011’s CES event, many more are expected for 2012’s show. But as the workforce adapts to this trend in technology, adaption has been made to ease the transition from laptops as productivity on a laptop cannot be matched with a tablet alone.

Hence the move to hybrid computing, which is expected to develop with more sophistication through the year. Analyst Tim Bajarin wrote in PC Magazine as many as five hybrids designs are expected to pop up at the 2012 International CES, with more on the horizon pending the commercial release of Windows 8.

While there have been some hybrid models already developed, the technology hasn’t been there to make this a mainstream concept quite yet (a fault of design, and mixed operating systems). Evolving from traditional, swivel-based tablet PCs, the hybrid’s tablet-based screen will pop off for use as a modern day tablet.

Bajarin predicts the development of Windows 8 for Ultrabooks will be a major game-changer, shooting hybrid computing into the limelight. Tablets and PCs will both have the same Windows 8 Metro UI, streamlining the same user experience for both devices.

He wrote: "I have seen some stunning early hybrid designs, convincing me that at the hardware level, the vendors could really nail the concept this time around. However, it is the software that will make or break this hybrid idea. In that case, it all rests on Microsoft’s ability to deliver a solid Windows 8 tablet version and a powerful Windows 8 version for the laptop, too."
