Michael Dell, the CEO of Dell, recently said that smartphones and tablets pose no threat to PCs. He said that internet users will always eventually turn to PCs in order to have better viewing experience and that if given an option to choose between a PC, tablet or smartphone, most people will settle for PCs.
Dell said that in developing countries, there are more mobile-phone subscribers than PC owners as the phones are inexpensive. But Dell is hopeful that people from developing countries too will begin opting for the PCs as they will inevitably feel the need to use the internet on a larger screen.
IDC, a well-known research firm too had expressed similar opinions. The research firm had said that tablets can in no way replace PCs, pointing it to the recent figure of worldwide shipments of PCs in the third quarter of 2011 increasing by 3.6 percent. IDC has said that this is an indication that PC sales are not affected despite the increasing popularity of tablets and smartphones.
Dell said that the company's revenues from tablets in the third quarter fell by 2 percent. The company has also revealed that it has begun focusing on software and services sectors as the IT market requires software and services along with hardware. The company is hopeful that the latest acquisitions it has made will help it do well in the software and solutions front too.
