New Lenticular Laptop Rental Promises to Deliver 3D Without Goofy Glasses

In the laptop rental business, we find that there are several new technologies that stand to change the market, such as hands-free, optical controls as demonstrated by Lenovo. But another burgeoning trend falls into quite another dimension – literally. Yes, I’m referring to 3D technology.

At last year’s CES, the two big showings were tablets and 3D-enabled devices – and there’s no reason that 3D shouldn’t make an appearance on laptops as well as projectors and televisions. Of course, there are drawbacks to 3D adaption that have been holding its progress back – such as overall cost and the necessity of bulky goggle utilization.

A new model from Toshiba, called the Qosmio F750, stands to change all of that. It’s able to deliver 3D games and videos through an advanced lenticular display, alleviating a need for those clunky bifocals.

The lenticular technology emits different signals to the left and right eyes – which is frankly very neat. Lenticular. I’ve now shuffled that term into my tech rolodex, right next to "virtualization", "RAID 10" and "dark fiber."

But that isn’t the Qosmio’s only selling point. It comes with an Intel Sandy Bridge i7 processor, Blu-ray drive and a NVIDIA GEForce GT 540m graphics card – among other things. For example, it does come with the afore-mentioned eye-tracking optical control feature.

It’s not all good of course – the Qosmio’s coolest feature, its 3D capability, only really works with supported games and videos. Right now, the software that allows for that conversion is fairly limited, because the F750 isn’t slated for release until Sept. of this year.

According to an initial engadget review, however, the overall results did seem promising. "The software was less production-ready, and we were only able to watch a few 3D video clips that Toshiba had loaded on there. Nevertheless, the videos we saw were pretty mouthwatering -- at least once our eyes and brain adjusted to the 3D effect."

We’re excited to see goggle-free 3D devices make their way into our laptop rental inventory. For business class customers looking for the best in notebooks crafted by Lenovo, IBM, HP, Dell and the other leading manufacturers – keep us in mind. We offer next-day delivery, internationally.
