Lenovo has become the No.2 PC maker in the world, overtaking Dell. It secured the runners up position when it registered a market share of 13.3 percent in worldwide PC shipments. Dell, which was the former No.2 PC maker, has 12.0 percent of the market.
HP still maintains the top position despite talks of spinning off its PC business.
Mikako Kitagawa, an analyst with Gartner, said that Lenovo was able to reach this position because of the manufacturer's acquisition of Medion and its merger with NEC. He also said that HP's announcement about spinning off its PC business too has helped Lenovo attain more market share. All the major PC models offered by Lenovo are available to rent from our computer rental service.
Lenovo's Consumer and SMB businesses manager Jay Parker remarked that the company was able to reach the top position because of its channel partners. He also said that the remarkable growth that has taken place in the SMB market too has helped the company be a leading player.
Parker stated that the new ThinkPad Edge series from the company, which is specially designed to provide 'think-brand' attributes, also has boosted the business of Lenovo.
The CEO of Dell, Michel Dell, said that the company is not concerned about losing its position to Lenovo. He said that Dell is dedicated to its PC business and respects Lenovo as a worthy competitor. He also stated that Dell is focused on high-value solutions and profits and less on hardware sales.
