LCD Taken to the Next Level with Quantum Dot Technology

LCD technology is about to get a whole lot more colorful.

As if the clarity on today’s LCD displays aren't impressive enough, Nanosys, an advanced materials architect carrying nanoscale design to components that are ready for the manufacturing process, has announced the next generation of LCD technology with the Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF).

And the good news: the QDEF is ready for display manufacturers to grab and run with.

New products developed with this technology will allow users to view a screen with three times the color gamut as what’s currently available. The best part for manufacturers is the cost—there are no tradeoffs in this area as size and brightness will not have to be sacrificed as it has in the past.

Within the color spectrum, the human eye sees green and red more vibrantly than any other—and these are the notable changes users will notice, according to Geeky Gadgets. The reds will be more viscerally vibrant and the greens will be of a deeper hue.

The current LCD displays found in our smartphones, tablets, laptops and TVs are only capable of showing 20 to 35 percent of the colors the human eye can see. The development of QDEF allows display makers to impellent the quantum dot technology as an optical film, enabling manufacturers to scale the size including large televisions, like the plasma TVs we rent to businesses at Vernon Computer Source, one of many LCD options we have available in our IT rental fleet.

"We believe color will be a significant differentiator for early adopters of quantum dot technology; and, QDEF will give display makers a competitive edge by providing consumers with a color quality experience they have only seen in movie theaters and professionally printed photos," said Jason Hartlove, president and CEO of Nanosys in a statement. "Almost all content available today has to be dialed down to match the limited capabilities of current displays, but with a QDEF enabled display developers and producers can create a photo-quality color experience for the user."
