Intel’s Hybridized Cloud Targets SMBs as Next Server Rental Frontier
As we wrote yesterday, small businesses (SMBs) are the hot new market for server manufacturers (and server rental companies, like ourselves). That’s because of all the institutions that have the potential to convert over to the cloud, this particular sector still has plenty of room to grow. And pardon the pun, but the sky’s the limit. There are several reasons why an SMB would be loathe to leap into the cloud – perhaps they’re afraid, and there’s not enough information out there to comfort them. Or perhaps the thought of having an in-house server is just too scary for a Mom & Pop to even begin thinking about. But there’s money out there in small business land, if only these sources can be convinced to convert. Which is exactly Intel’s thought process in crafting its latest offering, AppUp Small Business Service. At its core, the function is that of a hybridized server operating off of a local, premise-based server. And those that run Intel’s new solution will have access to solutions such as ERP, security and backup as a service. And boy do we have Intel’s number. The company’s general manager, Bridget Karlin, even went so far as to name her employer’s game. She said, “[For SMBS…] Having their data on premise is absolutely the advantage.” Lenovo and other manufacturers will begin manufacturing one-socket Xeon-based servers to suit this burgeoning need – and one that we fully expect to catch on. Intel’s service will only cost a few dollars a month, and it delivers on-site security with a staggered, pay-per-use sort of financial structure. Not only is this innovative line of thought great for Intel, it’s also great for us. This movement spurs a whole new demand for our small- to mid-range server offerings like our Oracle Sun Fire or IBM x86 models.Between our North American and European locations, we are well poised to service this new, growing demand – so please keep us in mind. Want to run your own virtualization service? Call on us to provide the equipment… for a fraction of the start-up cost. |
