IBM Power7 Server Rentals are Here; And They’re Building a Stairway to the Cloud

We’ve officially welcomed servers powered by IBM’s POWER7 chipset into our inventory – but are concerned that the world might not understand the breadth of their applications.

Good ol’ Big Blue is capitalizing on that cloud momentum, as its POWER7 servers support the SR-IOV standards and an improved I/O virtualization setup. With L3 caching and 1.2 billion transistors , each POWER7 processor core is capable of four-way simultaneous multithreading (SMT). Clocking in at 3.0-4.5 GHz, these 4-, 6- or 8-core configured server options can put out a maximum of 33.12 GFLOPS per core.

Security and fluidity have always been a concern when it comes to cloud adaption, but IBM’s POWER7 offerings might be able to appease certain sectors.

As an example, consider IBM’s Power 720 Express Server – a UNIX-compliant option offering reliability, security and flexibility. It may be a real winner as it has distributed application functionality designed to operate with less disruption and more consolidation (it can run on AIX, IBM I and Linux).

For a cost-effective, modifiable infrastructure that can be modified over time to reflect on liquidity, our customers should consider the Power 720 Express. It’s a one-socket server that can support up to eight POWER7 cores in either a rack or form factor.

In the cloud-geared world, all companies are trying to get rid of unnecessary servers so that they can streamline down to a more energy-efficient footprint. The Power 720 Express certainly empowers that initiative, as it can run multiple applications out of just one box – minimalizing the overall number of required servers (and therefore, reducing costs).

The Power 720 Express comes with multiple recovery features, such as RAS capabilities designed to ensure optimal redundancy. There are continuous monitoring systems in place that can detect errors and redirect workloads as needed. And, because the Power 720 Express comes standard with “Light Path” diagnostics, it can tell users when components have failed. This limits the amount of time that it used to take to diagnose a problem, which also happens to add value.

Get your applications running faster (and on less processors) today – and take advantage of our server rental options.
