HP is Staying Mobile with Windows 7 Tablet, Slate 2

After we thought HP's mobile sector was dead, and its PC unit about to depart from the company's control -- the company has surprised us all under its latest CEO, Meg Whitman.

To begin, it's not going to spin off its PC unit.  It's too expense a venture, and besides, it is the largest PC manufacturer in the world, leading the pack among all of its competitors.

With failed smartphone ventures and the infamous HP TouchPad tablet that found success only the wake of its demise, you may have thought (and its former CEO did suggest) that the mobile unit of HP was also on its way out.

However, the company has just released its new Slate Tablet, to operate with Windows 7 OS, a week after announcing its intention to keep its PC unit.

The new tablet is targeted toward businesses, with an 8.9-inch capacitive touch display and the fast processing speed of the Intel Atom Z670 processor.

Future tablets developed by HP will operate on Windows 8, a notion that rings familiar to its other, non-Apple competitors like Dell.

HP's category manager for emerging products, Kyle Thornton said that the Slate 2 will easily integrate in Windows environments, in an effort to appeal to the business crowd.

"Enterprise customers are really looking for easy integration into their infrastructure," Thornton said, according to CIO magazine.

He added the tablet will further feature access to corporate documents for the user, as well as the ability to take notes through stylus input.

There is also an optional external keyboard, that while eliminating some of the portability appeal, can allow the user to double up the tablet as a PC, of he or she so chooses.
