Google's Mobile Chief Highlights Android-Tablet Potential
Defending the honor of one of his company’s more recent acquisitions—the operating system Android—Google’s Mobile Chief Andy Rubin said that tablets operating on Android have not all “completely flopped.” Android has been given a lot of flack recently because of its inability to compete with the ever-popular iOS that runs Apple’s iPad. But Rubin countered these sentiments at the All Things Digital AsiaD conference today by revealing figures that have been overlooked. Rubin reportedly said, “there are more than 6 million Android tablets out there,” and that’s without the addition of other ereader tablets like the Nook Color, according to Mashable. But the continuing reign of iPad’s popularity, particularly among personal consumers is undeniable. While Rubin points out there are 6 million Android tablets available, Apple has sold more than 40 million iPads since its release. As has been noted by industry analysts before, however, new competitors with a smaller price tag like Amazon with its upcoming “Kindle Fire” may turn the tables for Android. Other exciting news from Google about its OS is the recently unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich that will “unify Android for tablets and smartphones into one mobile operating system.” Rubin further addressed another area that has been subject to heavy criticism by users and industry analysts alike, with a promise that the Android market would be seeing improvements under Google’s control. “It’s going to get better exponentially very soon,” said Rubin. While iPad’s popularity can’t really be called into question, there are some tablets that have resonated within the business industry, as can be seen through our experience with clients’ interest in Android-based tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
