The Future CPU Technology in Computer Rental

With 2012 International CES approaching in the coming weeks, tech analysts have begun their usual pre-show predictions to estimate what the industry’s major players will debut, and what future trends are about to ensue.

Nate Ralph of PC World wrote an article on what users can expect from future CPUs (central processing units); namely, Intel, AMD and Nvidia. The general trend is "smaller, stronger and more energy-efficient," as usual.

The latest innovation from Intel came this year with the introduction of Sandy Bridge CPUs that were able to cut power costs and improve integrated graphics performance from the preceding Clarkdale processors. The next move, according to Ralph, is the Sandy Bridge CPU shrunk down to a 22-nanometer form with the new code name, "Ivy Bridge," said to outperform both of its earlier counterparts and inevitably provide better battery life for future desktops and laptops.

Intel representatives that spoke with Ralph assured users who have recently invested in Intel’s Sandy Bridge Extreme Edition processor will have a clear upgrade path to Ivy Bridge Extreme Edition through its use of the LGA 2011 socket.

Ivy Bridge will also feature native support for USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, and DirectX 11 support.

AMD’s developments will extend from its latest Bulldozer CPU microarchitecture with its newest enhancement, code named Piledriver. Not quite up to speed with Intel’s progress with 22-nanometer with Ivy Bridge, Piledriver is expected to maintain a 32-nanometer architecture, wrote Ralph.

When it comes to mobile CPUs, Nvidia Tegra 3 was the first to step up with a quad-core offering, with an ARM Cortex A9 CPU and an integrated 12-core GeForce GPU. Ralph estimates a surge of Android tablets emerging in the market with these chips.

The world will know more after CES is in full-swing, but it is safe to say that the direction of CPUs will lead to lighter hardware with increasingly better performance.
