A Flock of HTC Flyers Are About to Soar in to Our Tablet Rental Inventory

It seems that everyone is all aboard the tablet train these days, and HTC is no exception.

A few months ago we wrote about the HTC Flyer, and the implications it has for both business and cloud gaming. But now that tablet is about to be released, and we’re standing by to see what kind of results it will get on the open market.

Apple has enjoyed its lofty perch for awhile now and has been able to evade all comers. While analysts are predicting Android OS-based tabs will eventually overtake the juicy fruit’s stronghold, they’re also wagering that it will take up to three years for that to happen.

Which is probably an accurate estimate, considering how long it took other smartphones to catch up to the iPhone.

The 7-inch HTC Flyer will officially be live to the public on May 22, where it will be available from Best Buy for the price of $499.

The Flyer will run on Android Honeycomb 2.3, which is a pretty well-received operating system, but it has other benefits.

It will have a 1.5 GHz processor and WiFi, but no 3G access. It comes with HTML5 and Flash access, both of which are du rigor these days, WiFi printing capability, a front-facing camera, stereo speakers and others features.

Of these other features, two stand out. The first is a digipen that works with the tablet’s screen to enable handwritten notes, text selection and other writing-related tasks.

The HTC Flyer Will Join Our Other Tablet Rentals

Florian Seiche, the head of HTC Europe, had positive opinions on the reception he expects the Flyer will receive. In a statement given to Thomson Reuters, Seiche said, “I really believe that the tablet market is really going to be a big market in the future and this is just the start.” He added, “In five years' time, schools will have tablets probably instead of physical notebooks. I think that's going to be such a massive wave of additional penetration in society. I think we can't even guess the potential."
