Bolster Capacity and Security with a Server Rental
A server-driven network crash has brought plenty of attention to the safety and reliability of Nonghyup Bank. The incident, which was likely caused by activity from a hack attack on the bank’s servers, has illicited outrage from the Seoul Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. A representative from that office said, "The instruction that ordered the deletion of data (rm.dd) to the bank’s network was part of the attack software prepared in advance." The official went on to add that "The software used in the server attack is known to have been designed by someone who knows the structure of Nonghyup’s network well. Given the way it was attacked, neither an unintentional crime nor a simple glitch was likely." A hacker seems like the most likely culprit, but it’s remained difficult for the IT personnel at Nonghyup to track down the actual source of the problem. It may have been a hack from within – or from without. While details on this particular situation are a little slow in coming, the entire scenario shows why a secure and well-maintained server infrastructure is a priority for many companies. Whether a business is foreign or local, a bank or a big manufacturer, they face many of the same woes. In addition to security, capacity is also a common concern. Toshiba recently came forward about a problem it was having with limited physical server space in its Australia data centers. As per Russell Barnard, Toshiba’s enterprise systems team leader, the company knew it had a problem. Barnard said, "Our data centers were basically full to capacity and we had trouble even keeping those servers cool. It was obvious we needed to do something that was going to give us some breathing space and free up some room." Toshiba wound up turning to VMware,a popular virtualization software to help virtualize 60 percent of its server fleet, a move with relieved its storage requirements by up to 50 percent. With VMware, the company can deploy servers in mere minutes. Toshiba still maintains its in-house servers for good reason. If you know where your servers are, you can best monitor them… and keep them safe from the prying hands of hackers. Editor’s Note: For companies interested in trying out VMware on their own server systems, or in trying out a piece of equipment with VMware already installed, call Vernon Computer Source for a server rental. That way, you can try out the technology before you invest in it fully. |
