Apple Springs Ahead in Tablet Rentals Contest and NVIDIA’s Splitting Hares

NVIDIA isn’t too happy with the level of attention that Android OS-based tablets have been getting.

And that’s no shocker to us, the world’s largest supplier of iPad rental products. We’ve stocked Apple’s darlings en masse because that’s what our clients – business people – have been asking for. And that’s not for lack of trying. We also stock Motorola Xooms, Samsung Galaxy Tabs and HP Slate 500s – but few individuals are calling in asking for them.

Right now, it’s all iPads, iPads, iPads.

If you consider the past trends (ahem, the five years it took alternatively OS’ed smartphones to catch up to the iPhone), it’s pretty obvious NVIDIA’s huffing and puffing is going to fall upon deaf ears.

The public likes its shiny, colourful, Neko Case-endorsed advertisements.

And that is precisely part of the problem. According to NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, “It’s a point of sales problem. It’s an expertise at retail problem. It’s a marketing problem to consumers. It is a price point problem.”

And these are problems that not only Huang has been acknowledging. Richard Shim, an analyst over at DisplaySearch, had this to say: “Apple is not only better able to explain its product to consumers through dedicated sales people, but it also captures more margin than competitors who have to share margin with retail partners.”

Inevitably, this tortoise and the hare scenario will play out with Android tablets as the victor, because Android is simply a better system – being open source – and it’s improving all the time. Huang remained optimistic that the “new wave of affordable tablets” will be the real game changers, making the devices far more compatible than they had been in the past.

But for now, Apple will reign supreme. It got their first, and it got there with its killer marketing team behind it.
